While a visit to the dentist can be a traumatic experience for many people, it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Sedation dentistry allows our patients to relax while our general dentists provide a variety of services.
Both of our sedation methods are types of conscious sedation, meaning you will not be “put to sleep.” Most patients can still respond to questions, although they are significantly more relaxed. Some patients become so relaxed that they fall asleep.
You will be given a pill as well as directions on when and how to take it before your appointment. Because there is no IV involved, oral sedation may be a fitting option for patients with a fear of needles. If you choose oral sedation, someone will need to drive you to and from your appointment.
Nitrous oxide is a gas the patient inhales through a mask. Some people call nitrous oxide “laughing gas” for the feelings of euphoria it causes. Like oral sedation, nitrous oxide does not involve any needles; however, nitrous oxide does not have the same after-effects as oral sedation, so you may be able to drive yourself home after your appointment.
It’s not at all uncommon to experience discomfort in the dentist’s chair. Sedation helps ease your discomfort and simplifies the appointment for you. Examples of patients who may benefit from sedation dentistry include:
